About our project

All Donations are Tax-deductible thanks to the Cancer 101 Foundation.

We need to spread The Walking Gallery movement. To do that we need a short film to use as a how-to guide so other artists and Walkers can join The Walking Gallery.

What is the Walking Gallery?

The Walking Gallery is a walking wall of individuals who wear personal patient narrative paintings on their backs. They are attending medical conferences where often there isn’t a patient speaker on the dais or in the audience. They are providing a patient voice, and by doing so, are changing the conversation. While creating national health policy medical professionals and government officials are often more reliant on aggregate data sets, bar charts, graphs and statistics, rather than the whole picture of care, the personal patient narrative and the individual human face.

What is the movement about?

The Walking Gallery movement hopes to diversify the source content that is used to create the foundation for patient centered care policy, by infusing art imagery depicting a unique patient history or personal story.

How it Works:

An artist or artists will interview medical professionals and lay individuals to form a patient centric narrative. The artist will then create representational imagery and paint that picture story upon the business jacket of the provider of the narrative account. The provider of the patient story aka “Walker” will wear the jacket to medical conferences and events in order to disseminate the patient story to a large group of policy minded attendees and to represent the individual patient voice in venues where they are underrepresented. Further, both artist and walker will support the spread of the story and image via social media.

The Data:

As of April 2013, 210 unique Walkers have joined the Gallery wearing 232 jackets. The Gallery has representatives on five continents, but the majority of Walkers reside in the US. One artist creates the majority of the art, but new artists are joining and currently make up 14% of content creation within of the Walking Gallery. The Gallery is promoted heavily on Twitter, Facebook and personal blogs. Its widening appeal within the health conference community is creating a new space for patients at such events.

What these Funds Will Be Used For:

This second crowdfunding goal is to raise money so the team at Eidolon Films can make a short documentary about The Walking Gallery. Eidolon Films created 73 Cents, a wonderful documentary about the mural 73 Cents, a painting that helped shape health policy.

Our goal in creating this new documentary is to spread this patient advocacy movement to an even wider audience, recruit more artists and to inspire more people to walk with stories on their backs.

My First Project vs. This One!

Medstartr fans might notice this is my second crowdfund on this platform. The first one paid for the travel, lodging and set-up costs for a Kansas City gathering of the Walking Gallery at the Partnership with Patients Summit in September of 2012.

That event was a big success and was written about by Sarah Barr, a staff writer with Kaiser Health News.

About Regina Holiday

Regina Holliday is an activist, artist, speaker and author in Washington DC. You might see her at a health conference painting the content she hears from the patient view. She is part the movement known as participatory medicine. She and others in this movement believe that the patient is a partner with their provider and both should work together as a team. Regina, like her friend Dave deBronkart, is also an e-patient.

She utilizes the tools of technology and social media to better understand the patient condition and the landscape of medicine. Regina is a mother and a widow; she speaks about the benefits of HIT and timely data access for patients due to her family loss. In 2009, she painted a series of murals depicting the need for clarity and transparency in medical records. This advocacy mission was inspired by her late husband Frederick Allen Holliday II and his struggle to get appropriate care during 11 weeks of continuous hospitalization at 5 facilities. Her paintings became part of the national debate on health care reform and helped guide public policy.

She published a book with the help of the Health Informatics Society of Australia (HISA) entitled: “The Walking Wall: 73 Cents to the Walking Gallery.”

About the Rewards

The T-Shirt!

The Art of Regina Holliday is featured on teh back of the MedStartr T-Shirt. This is the T-Shirt we are using for this campaign too.

The Front was designed by the fabulous Dr. Nima Sheikholeslami of PositiveMed, also awesome!

Teaching, Events, and Movie Screenings

MedStartr, XanateMedia and HIBC.TV have been running events adjacent to the Health 2.0 HIMSS, and mHealth conference since 2010 and have offered to help us run a screening adjacent to these fabulous conferences. If you want to arrange an event at your Medical School, University, Nursing School, or Company, we would love to help too. The goal of the film is to spread the Participatory Medicine movement as far and fast as possible. As @Farzhad_ONC says, “Patient engagement is the blockbuster drug of the century.” – National Coordinator for Health IT, Dr. Farzad Mostashari. We want to enable Doctors, Nurses, Patients, Physical Therapists to do as ePatientDave says, “Let Patients Help”

Coming to teach a class for a day at your school to the providers of tomorrow, patient activists, or even employees for employers that want to have a healthier workforce and drive down costs, is a perfect way to spread the message.
