About Me

Andrew Brownlee is a senior cardiothoracic surgery fellow at the University of Chicago. His research is focussed on the integration of technology into surgery and surgical education. He recently developed a mobile-based application that allows fellows and attending surgeons to communicate about the fellow’s performance in a case. The mobile app breaks down every surgery into fundamental case elements and allows each element to be scored by both the fellow and the attending. Andrew is currently completing a manuscript on a multi-year study that assesses the utility of measuring muscle density on CT scans (morphomics) in preoperative esophagectomy patients both pre and post-chemoradiotherapy to determine if low muscle mass (sarcopenia) affects postoperative outcomes. He has written multiple textbook chapters and journal articles on topics in thoracic and general surgery and is a reviewer for the New England Journal of Medicine and the Annals of Thoracic Surgery. He is a board-certified general surgeon and a member of the American College of Surgeons and the Society for Thoracic Surgeons.
