The Problem We Solve
More than 50 million people in the U.S. have asthma or COPD – that’s one in every six people in just America alone. Think about that.
These two chronic conditions are estimated to cost payers and patients more than $100 billion annually. Furthermore, managing the care of COPD patients alone will cost upwards of $90 billion by 2020, according to the CDC. Obviously, doubling costs every 5 years is unsustainable.
The good news is that this rise in costs could be prevented. It’s estimated that up to one half of all healthcare costs are the result of wasteful spending. That’s right, 50 percent. A large part of this waste could be eliminated or significantly reduced if chronic conditions, such as Asthma or COPD, would be properly managed, preventing unnecessary emergency room visits and/or hospital readmissions.
Our technology platform, SpiroSano, tackles two if the main ongoing problems currently burdening today’s respiratory care space.
First, no current solution gives physicians a fully dynamic picture of their patient’s ongoing health while allowing them to manage these specific chronic conditions prior to exacerbations that lead to unnecessary, costly hospital visits.
Second and equally troubling, physicians don’t have an efficient, cost-effective method for engaging patients in the management of their respiratory conditions and proactively educating them about the impacts of their actions.
The SpiroSano Solution
In short, SpiroSano is the first end-to-end technology platform dedicated to managing respiratory disease states, such as asthma and COPD. So, how does it do this?
SpiroSano is a patent-pending solution for doctors to prescribe “personalized disease management kits” that provide the information needed to more effectively manage respiratory conditions and prevent symptoms. The main components of the SpiroSano platform are the parameter kits, a patient portal, a doctor portal and a population management application. The key part of the solution, the disease management kit, consists of a personalized set of monitored parameters defined by a doctor and matched with a set of appropriate devices and apps, such as a spirometer, pulse oximeter, or an activity tracker.
Through our system, doctors have access to a wide range of real-time, usable data that allows them to effectively manage disease states and reduce costs by treating patients proactively and increasing overall system efficiency. This directly begins to address the wasteful healthcare spending.

How We Help Patients
Patients with respiratory conditions (such as asthma and COPD) directly benefit from SpiroSano by having a platform to manage and track their activities and episodes. The SpiroSano technology kit allows patients to share the data they track with their physician in a way that will lead to identification of trends and improvement in treatments – ultimately resulting in improved patient health.
Patients will be able to work with their doctor to create and control a personalized disease management kit comprised of a mobile app, web tools, devices and data components that will meet the individual needs of the patient. The SpiroSano platform is pre-integrated with the leading technologies and devices on the market today, allowing for better access and more data streams than any other respiratory solution.

How We Help Doctors
Simply, SpiroSano gives doctors the tools they need to determine the best treatment for their patients. The SpiroSano platform allows doctors to create a personalized disease management kit for each patient to track their data. The data streams are aggregated and trends are identified, providing doctors with unparalleled insight into the triggers and treatment patterns that will best benefit their patients.
The SpiroSano platform creates a complete infrastructure for managing multiple respiratory disease states, such as asthma and COPD, and for supporting highly beneficial behavioral changes, such as smoking cessation, physical activity and weight loss in patients with respiratory conditions.
For doctors, SpiroSano:
- Provides real-time access to all key biological parameters of patients outside of the hospital
- Allows review of aggregated data with their patients and educate patients with real-life data through a web-based tool
- Delivers an open platform for additional devices and technologies to be integrated
- Integrates all components and data streams into a single HIPPA-compliant solution
How We Help Partners and Institutions
By using the SpiroSano platform, healthcare providers could make quantifiable progress on all three targets of healthcare reform as defined by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), including:
- Improving the patient experience of care
- Improving the health of populations
- Reducing the per capita cost of health care
Both Medicare and private insurers have already defined key performance indicators for measuring and rewarding/penalizing providers’ performance with managing respiratory patients. A perfect example is Medicare’s ACO #9 quality indicator that quantifies how well a particular Accountable Care Organization (ACO) manages Asthma and COPD patients. Starting in 2015, low performing ACOs will be penalized by Medicare and receive lower payments, while high performers will be rewarded with bonus payments. Healthcare providers, such as ACOs and other institutions, could directly leverage the SpiroSano solution to reduce the number of unmanaged Asthma and COPD patients, helping those organizations be identified as high performers in that area.
For research purposes, SpiroSano could provide to its partners aggregated, anonymized data from a constantly growing number of vital parameter sources that can be delivered through HIPPA-compliant methods. Additionally, SpiroSano is integrated with leading raw genomic data providers, allowing for genetic information to be factored into research studies at a low cost. Finally, the platform integrates several air quality data sources, which provide extremely valuable contextual data.
We’re just scratching the surface of ways future partners and institutions can benefit from SpiroSano.
How We Will Spend Your Contributions
Our main focus now is proving what we fully believe: that SpiroSano works for patients, doctors, and institutions. And the only way that can be done is through clinical studies.
Our first study, launching in November, will focus on validating the platform benefits. Based on initial findings and prior to launching additional studies, we plan to focus on refining the SpiroSano solution and optimize the patient and doctor experiences.
Funding from you will be used to acquire device kits for this initial study, and the size of the group enrolled will be directly related to available funding for acquiring devices. Since the kits are personalized to individual patients there is not an exact number, however, we believe achieving our goal will support 20 patient kits.
Funding beyond our goal will be focused on designing and building a simplified patient engagement interface for advanced stage patients without a smartphone, installed on a dedicated low-cost tablet.
Additionally, some of our larger backer levels would result in funding focused on the reward itself and the associated collaboration.
Our Founders
SpiroSano was founded by a core team of two entrepreneurs who have a history of success building profitable businesses both inside larger organizations and independently. They’ve successfully built multi-million dollar businesses both together and separately and have a unique and strong command of several disconnected fields, such as medicine, healthcare infrastructure, mobile technology, and product marketing. That knowledge coupled with a functioning solution, pending patent protection, and a history of being flexible and agile enough to make startups successful ideally positions us for success.
