This project was successfully funded.
Movn took second place in the 2015 AHA Open Innovation Challenge!. They did this thanks to support here in MedStartr and by giving a great demo at the Health Sciences Forum on April 22nd in NYC.
Thanks to the support of NYCBIO, all donations to this project are Tax Deductible. To learn more about NYCBIO, please visit NYCBio.org.

Movn helps cardiac rehab (CR) centers dramatically increase enrollment and revenues; through a mobile platform for nurse-administered, home-based cardiac rehabilitation.
Only 20% of patients after a heart attack/surgery participate in cardiac rehab (CR), despite it’s well proven increase in life expectancy (5 years) and reduction in readmissions (30%). The most cited reasons for lack of participation are long distance between CR centers and patient homes, the huge time commitment (3 times a week for 12 weeks) and high patient co-pays (up to $1,800). This is bad news not just for patients and their families, but the average CR center loses $2M in unearned revenues annually. As a result many CR centers barely break even and many major hospitals don’t offer CR.
Movn enables CR centers deliver home-based programs to patients through their mobile devices. Movn consists of a mobile app that guides patients through their-care plan and a web-based case management system for nurses to administer the program and get reimbursed (up-to $2,400/patient).
Cardiac rehab consists of supervised exercise coaching, education and counseling. Movn automates the exercise and education components of cardiac rehab and delivers them to patients through the mobile app; while the nurse delivers the counseling sessions via voice/video calls.
Movn is based on over 20 years of research in home-based cardiac rehabilitation. Home-based cardiac rehab has been shown to produce the same clinical outcomes, re-admissions & adverse event rates as traditional rehab. In hospitals that implement home-based CR, 5 times more patients participate and 90% of them complete the program.
Clinical deployment of Movn will begin in Q2 2015 with the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California.
Other traction include:
. Launched Beta version of Movn on Google Play store with 20,000 downloads and an average rating of 4.1/5
. Completed usability pilot that demonstrated Movn increased exercise capacity amongst senior adults by 15% over a 3 weeks
. Relationship with the connected heart health initiative at the American Heart Association
FDA regulation not required presently. As the relationship between mHealth and the FDA evolves, Movn will comply with all requirements and regulations.
Movn increase patient’s accessibility to cardiac rehab, which is the embodiment of AHA’s life’s simple 7 strategies to prevent cardiovascular disease and stroke. When patients are able to complete cardiac rehab; their mortality rate is reduced by 58% in the first year, readmissions are reduced by 34% and life expectancy increases by 5 years.
Although most patients will love to do cardiac rehab, the harsh reality of the high-copays, long-commutes and huge time commitments cardiac rehab requires makes it impossible. As a result 80% of patients go without adequate care after a heart attack/surgery. This leads to increase in re-admissions and mortality. We enable patients receive the full benefits of cardiac rehab wherever they are at their own convenience. We also reduce the number of visits required, which makes CR more affordable.
The average cardiac rehab center receives 1000 referrals a year of which only 200 patients enroll and less than 65% of them complete the program. This results in over $2M in unearned reimbursements per year. Movn enables CR centers to augment their current operations with a reimbursable home-based program so they can capture, serve and monetize those patients who don’t participate. With our product CR centers can earn $2,400 per patient and one case manager can serve 200 patients annually; hence significantly increasing revenues with low operating costs.
Cardiac rehab has been proven to reduce re-admissions by 30% and increase life expectancy by 5 years. For patients who don’t do cardiac rehab the readmission rates as high as 45%, under Obamacare this results in significant financial penalties and low quality ratings. Hospital systems like Kaiser Permanente and the VA which implement home-based rehab have shown that 5 times more patients enroll and 90% of them complete the program. By implementing Movn your hospital will be able to provide quality care to patients at home; hence you’ll reduce readmissions and improve patient’s experience.
Movn is great for partners of various types, we have briefly described some ways we would like to or are already working with partners. Please be welcome to email us to discuss partnership ideas listed below of an idea you have.
Our partners include:
Hardware Vendors
We’d love to partner with hardware vendors to provide tablets, blood pressure cuffs, weighing scales, portable ECG devices and heart rate monitors that let patients easily track their health information.
Telcos
Cardiac rehab patients are predominantly in the 50+ age group, this represent a tremendous opportunity to provide wireless services to the fastest growing smartphone market.
AHA and all organizations interested in improving cardiac outcomes
One of the key agendas for the AHA is to increase the utilization of cardiac rehab. We believe in your mission and we’ve made it’s fruition our lives work. We’d love to work with you to develop innovative ways to make cardiac rehab more accessible, affordable and financially sustainable.
Cardiac rehab is the gold standard in managing cardiac patients post discharge. Movn alleviates the geographic, economic and logistical barriers that stand in the way of patient’s care. Therefore making it more accessible for patients and profitable for providers.
Our goal is to increase the utilization of cardiac rehab by making it more accessible for patients and profitable for providers. By increasing the utilization of CR, more patients will realize it’s benefits which will lead to fewer readmissions and mortality, and better cardiovascular health.
