Women’s Heart Health — Problem to be Solved

1 in 3 women die of heart disease or stroke. Despite being the leading cause of death in women, awareness of women’s heart disease is greatly lacking, with less than half knowing their risks. Heart health outcomes in women thus greatly lag behind those in men; for example, only 33% of women underwent potentially life and heart saving procedures after a myocardial infarction, compared to 45% of men. Following a heart attack, approximately 1 in 4 women will die within the first year, compared to 1 in 5 men.

How We are Working to Improve Women’s Heart Health

The Women’s Heart App (WHA) is the first Patient-Centered Digital Home for Cardiovascular Health in Women, providing a self-service model of clinical care for women to reduce individual personalized risk. The mobile app leverages analytics, informatics, and social connectivity to reduce health disparities and empower women to achieve better cardiovascular outcomes.

How WHA Works:

The Women’s Heart App is a mobile application integrated with wearables and backend data analytics to empower women to understand early warning signs, recognize and reduce risk factors, and link to expert providers in women’s cardiovascular health. By thoughtfully combining traditional risk scoring with gender-specific data analyses, our application integrates wearable technology and personalized health data with clinical tools to allow women to take control of their health.

Using our system, women can perform “guided self exams” to quantify risk factors for heart disease and collect vital data such as blood pressure, exercise activity, and weight. Self-assessment modules help guide a user to recognize the atypical symptoms of heart disease in women. Users also have social connectivity with others to match fitness tracking, caloric intake, and plans to reduce cholesterol or control blood pressure. A comprehensive list of providers who specialize in women’s cardiovascular health in their area is provided, facilitating appointments and appropriate medical care.

Clinical Proof to date

We are an early stage startup focused on leveraging emerging wearable technology and data analytics to improve cardiovascular outcomes. To that end, we have created several proprietary algorithms and are beta-testing a data aggregation platform. With the help of Medstartr and your support, we plan to utilize our technology in early pilot clinical trials aimed at reducing risk factors for women at the individual level.

FDA Status

We do not expect to require FDA approval for our mobile application. Recent FDA regulatory guidelines on mobile applications. Guidelines suggest that our application will be of Class I status and not require further risk assessment or regulatory oversight.

How your project will help reduce cardiovascular disease and stroke by 20% by 2020

Women’s cardiovascular health remains one of the greatest challenges within the U.S. today. Our solution helps support the AHA mission directly by promoting risk awareness and clinical care in a large population of Americans (Women) that has been traditionally been under-appreciated as an at-risk group.

Our application was created with the central mission of reducing the burden of heart disease in our users through a combination of risk assessment, social media based peer groups, and linking patients with care providers. By leveraging education, social awareness, and peer inspiration in a mobile, cloud based patient home, we will form a multifaceted environment that facilitates risk recognition and reduction and decreases the barriers for women to access care.

How We Help Patients:

The Women’s Heart App (WHA) is the first mobile application that provides a self-service model of clinical care for women to reduce individual personalized risk. Patients can leverage the technology and capabilities of the WHA to empower them to understand their cardiovascular risks, develop a plan, and enable that plan daily to achieve real personalized results. By increasing awareness and reducing risks, we help women achieve their goals of living longer, stronger, and healthier lives.

How We Help Doctors (or Other Care Givers):

The Women’s Heart App (WHA) is the first Patient-Centered Digital Home for Cardiovascular Health in Women, providing a self-service model of clinical care for reducing individual personalized risk. The WHA is not only a patient empowerment tool, but also a physician partner towards reducing cardiovascular risk factors such as blood pressure, obesity, cholesterol, and diabetes. The WHA can be recommended by physicians and used in conjunction with their practice to help their patients achieve their goals. While a physician may only see the patient at most a few times per year, the WHA is a daily companion that helps remind and enable the action plan that was agreed upon at the clinical visit.

How We Help Hospitals, Institutions, and/ or Medical Facilities:

Women’s cardiovascular health is now becoming a more recognized problem with many institutions now offering specialized centers focused on women’s health. The WHA is the first Patient-Centered Digital Home for Cardiovascular Health in Women, providing a self-service model of clinical care that can be leveraged in a women’s heart health program. Furthermore, WHA can allow institutions to expand their program offerings to the digital realm, enhancing the patient experience and promoting engagement and retention.

How We Help Our Partners:

The Women’s Heart App (WHA) is not only a mobile application, but also a data platform and aggregator for women’s cardiovascular health. With the permission of users, WHA collects aggregate anonymized data from its users in order to help promote research and further understanding into the field of women’s heart disease. We welcome the opportunity with industry and academic partners in best utilizing this data to reduce cardiovascular outcomes for all women.

How We Will Spend Your Contributions:

Our funding would be primarily aimed for three uses:

  1. Refining our beta version for release
  2. Marketing to promote adoption of the application
  3. Integration of further third party wearable technologies
  4. funding of clinical pilot studies.
